The Practice

What to Expect

Every session is shaped by what your body needs that day. Here's how the work unfolds — before, during, and well after your time on the table.

A Place to Land
Every session is a chance to slow down, let go, and let the body do what it already knows how to do — return to calm.
Section One

Your First Session

Complete a brief intake form upon arrival. The first ten to fifteen minutes are spent talking — what hurts, chronic holding patterns, your history. Observing posture and structure, building a complete picture of the whole body, not just the parts that hurt.

Gathering what matters — old injuries, surgeries, stress patterns, daily demands — the body holds all of it. This assessment shapes everything that follows.

Then you're on the table with a clear, customized plan based entirely on what's been shared and observed. Drawing from over forty modalities and techniques refined through thousands of bodies, blending them based on what your body actually needs that day.

Session Length Options

60 min
Focused work on a specific area
90 min
Comprehensive work with room for the whole picture
Recommended for first sessions
120 min
Deep, unhurried work for complex or chronic patterns

What to Wear

Something comfortable, easy to change out of. Undress for the session — how much depends on your comfort level and what we're working on. Draping keeps you covered and supported throughout. We'll discuss what works best before starting. Remove jewelry for the session, and know that hair and makeup may get a bit messy — that's part of the work.

The Bottom Line

Happy to work with clients as they are, whenever the schedule allows. If concerns or accommodations arise, let me know. We'll figure it out together.

What Happens During the Session

Every session is shaped by what the body needs that day. Depending on health conditions, preferences, and what serves you best, the flow adjusts. Variety in modalities matters — sessions customize to specific needs, whether that means avoiding certain areas, adjusting techniques, or shifting the entire flow. The session is built for YOU.

A Possible Session Flow

Begin with deep breathing and centering. The session may open with combinations of deep compressions, shiatsu, sports massage, energetic work, and passive stretching. Laying comfortably on the table, draping keeps you covered and supported throughout.

Upper body typically comes first: neck, shoulders, face, scalp, pectorals, traps, and arms. Most people carry tremendous tension here from work, phones, and daily demands. A blend of deep tissue, energetic, myofascial release, sports, shiatsu, ashiatsu, and structural therapies — woven together fluidly — addresses cerebrospinal fluid, lymphatics, blood flow, scar tissue, range of motion, and muscle tension, opening the shoulders and chest so the body can breathe easier and carry less stress.

Then the abdomen — which releases stored emotions, supports digestion, and has profound benefits throughout the system. Legs and feet receive blended techniques that free muscles and joints. Turn over for the back side, where many chronic patterns hide. Half-body strokes sedate the nervous system.

Throughout, modalities blend based on what emerges: deep tissue, injury, sports, energetic, structural, myofascial, passive stretching, shiatsu, and seated Ashiatsu — a barefoot technique using deep compression and gliding strokes. Hot towels are included in every session.

Add-Ons Available on Request

Hot stones, peppermint scalp massage, and Symphony of the Cells — a trained technique blending essential oils in patterns designed for specific needs and body systems.

Section Three

After Your Session

Every body responds differently. You may experience some, all, none, or different things — that's completely normal. Some responses happen during the session, others in the hours or days after. As the body transforms, we observe what emerges and adjust accordingly.

Your role is to notice and report what surfaces, and to do the self-care work given — stretching, heat or ice protocols, sleep posture awareness, and other tailored instructions. My role is to observe, help understand the body's response, then adjust care based on what's actually happening. No good or bad here — just information and continuous refinement as your unique picture unfolds.

Immediate Effects

Many feel deeply relaxed, lighter, more open. Some feel energized. Others feel pleasantly tired — the nervous system has shifted into profound rest, and the body may ask for sleep. This is healing. Honor it.

Within 24 to 48 Hours

You might notice mild soreness or tenderness, similar to after a good workout — normal as muscles and fascia adjust and release. Range of motion often improves: you'll move more freely, breathe easier, carry less tension.

Emotional Release

Massage isn't just physical. Stored emotions live in tissues. As tension releases, emotions may surface — tearful, emotional, angry, joyful, even laughter. This is healthy, natural healing. Let it move through without judgment.

The Healing Process

Over the next few days, the body continues its work. You might experience tingling, increased thirst, or more urination — signs the body is flushing and rebalancing. Headaches or mild achiness can occur as the body releases what it's been holding. This healing response is temporary. It signals positive change.

What Supports Recovery

Drink plenty of water. Rest when the body asks. Gentle movement like walking or easy stretching is fine — avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting for 24 hours. Most do well with warmth: a warm salt bath two to three hours after the session extends relaxation and supports continued release. If acute inflammation, swelling, or noticeable heat exists, ice helps reduce that. Every body is different — let me know about inflammation, injuries, or conditions, and I'll give specific guidance.

Why Follow-Up Matters

One session creates real change — but patterns built over years need time to fully resolve. Follow-up sessions support the body through transformation, preventing regression and deepening the work. This isn't about selling more sessions. It's about honoring the process. For maintenance, monthly or as needed. For acute issues or deeper structural patterns, weekly sessions for three to four weeks are typical — then stepping back to every two weeks, and eventually to maintenance.

Section Four

Before Your Session

Preparation helps your body receive the most from the work.

Hydrate

Drink water throughout the day — and especially in the days before your appointment. Well-hydrated tissues respond better to bodywork and release more easily. For deeper work like Ashiatsu, increase hydration even more.

Eat Light

Avoid heavy meals right before your session — a full stomach makes table time, especially abdominal work, uncomfortable. Something light an hour or two beforehand is ideal.

Skip Alcohol & Caffeine

Both work against the session. Alcohol dehydrates tissues and dulls body awareness. Caffeine keeps the nervous system activated when the goal is to settle into deep rest. Avoid both beforehand if you can.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

Don't come straight from an intense workout or heavy lifting. Inflamed, fatigued muscles are harder to work with effectively, and you may leave sorer than necessary. Book massage for a rest day or after activity, not before hard exertion.

Shower or Bathe

A warm shower or bath before your appointment helps settle your nervous system and preps your body for work. It's especially important if you've been active — sweat mixed with oils prevents the best grip and feel.

Disclose Your Health

Let me know about any skin conditions, open wounds, rashes, infections, medications, or health conditions before we begin. This helps me adjust the work appropriately and keeps you safe. If you're taking prescription pain medications, let me know — if possible, avoid taking them right before your session, as they mask pain signals your body uses to communicate. If you need them for daily function, take them as prescribed and simply let me know. We'll adjust accordingly.

Arrive Settled

Give yourself enough time so you're not rushing in stressed. A few quiet minutes before your appointment helps your body shift into a receptive state.

Mindset

Come open. The more honestly you share — what hurts, what's worn you down, what's happening in your life — the more precisely the work can meet you. Trust the process. Let yourself receive. This is your time.

Section Five

Questions?

A few things people often wonder about. There's no such thing as a silly question — the more you communicate, the better the work.

Will it hurt?
No. Massage should never be painful. You might feel deep pressure, especially if we're working on tight or restricted areas, but there's a difference between therapeutic pressure and pain. The right pressure allows your body to relax — if you're able to breathe and your muscles ease, we're at a good level. If it's making you hold your breath or tense up, let me know and we'll adjust. The goal is healing, not suffering.
What if I'm very tight or stiff?
That's exactly why you're here. Tightness and stiffness often mean the body has been holding patterns for years. Deep work can reach what surface massage misses. We'll work within what your body can handle, and over sessions, you'll notice things releasing that seemed stuck forever.
Will I be sore after?
You might notice mild soreness or tenderness, similar to after a good workout — especially after deeper work or your first session. This is normal and temporary, usually resolving within 24 to 48 hours. It's a sign the body is adjusting and healing. If soreness lasts longer or feels wrong, let me know.
What if I fall asleep during the session?
Perfect. Sleep during massage is a sign your nervous system has truly shifted into rest. Many clients do. Your body knows what it needs.
Is massage good for my specific condition?
Most conditions benefit from skilled massage work — chronic pain, acute injuries, postural issues, stress, emotional holding. However, some conditions need medical clearance first. During your intake, we'll discuss what's going on, and I'll let you know if massage is appropriate or if I need clearance from your doctor. Honesty about your health helps me serve you best.
Do I have to undress completely?
No. Undress to your comfort level. How much depends on what we're working on and what feels safe for you. We'll discuss this before the session, and you're always in control. Draping keeps you covered and supported throughout.
What should I do after?
Rest when your body asks. Drink plenty of water. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours. Gentle movement is fine. The benefits deepen over time — many report effects lasting days or weeks.
How often should I come?
It depends on what we're working with. For maintenance, monthly or as needed. For resolving acute or chronic issues, weekly sessions for three to four weeks are typical, or until you're pain-free throughout the week. Then we step back to every two weeks, eventually to maintenance. After your first session, we'll have a clear sense of the best timeline for your healing.
Is massage safe during pregnancy?
Prenatal massage can be wonderful, but it requires specific training and modifications. Let me know if you're pregnant so we can discuss whether this is the right time and what adjustments are needed.
What if I'm ticklish?
Ticklishness is often a sign of tense or guarded muscles — the body's protecting itself. Let me know, and we'll find the right technique and pressure that allows the work to happen without triggering that response. It's workable — just takes the right approach.
